KABUL: A suicide bomber detonated explosives in a wrestling gym in a Shiite-populated area of the Afghan capital on Wednesday, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 60, Afghan TOLO News reported quoting the Ministry of Interior in Kabul.
Reports indicate second bombing targeted first responders to scene of earlier explosion, TOLO news added.
It is the latest in a spate of attacks in the area. The bomber first shot dead a guard before entering the gym, where spectators had gathered to watch a match, said Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.
Nazir Gul, who lives nearby, told Arab News: “I counted at least 15 ambulances rushing there. That means the casualties are possibly higher than reported.”
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Daesh has claimed responsibility for all attacks targeting Shiites in Afghanistan in recent years.
